How to Identify a Couple When Only a Short Marriage Record Is Available?

In many congregations, only short-form marriage registers are available. These usually list only the names and surnames of the bride and groom—occasionally also the manor or farm where they were living and working at the time. So how can you identify the couple in such cases?

The short answer is: it can be quite difficult. Full marriage entries typically contain much more information, such as the names of the couple’s parents, place of birth, and age. I have described such records in a previous blog post.

What strategies can help identify the correct couple?

  • Extract all baptism records of children whose parents have the same names and surnames.

  • Pay attention to places of residence. If the couple were farm owners, they likely lived in the same location for several years. If they were servants or farmhands, they often had to move frequently, making them harder to trace.

  • Compare the birth dates of the children. It is unlikely (though not impossible) that a couple would have two children born in the same year.

  • Examine the names of godparents. These were often relatives of the parents, such as siblings. If you extract all the names of godparents, you may be able to uncover family relationships.

  • It may also be helpful to investigate the godparents’ own families—for example, their children’s baptism records. The more information you gather about possible relatives, the greater your chances of correctly identifying the family.

  • If the research period is before 1858, consult the revision lists (Latv. dvēseļu revīzijas). These list all household members and make it significantly easier to identify a family.

  • Search for death records. If you can locate the death records of the couple, these may help confirm identities, as they usually include place of birth and age at death. However, if the approximate year of death is unknown, this can be a time-consuming process.

  • Check civil parish fonds in the Latvian State Historical Archives. Some parishes have resident lists, however these are available only in the archives.. You can read more about parish board fonds here and how to locate them in the archives here .

An important reminder: The bride may have been a widow, and the surname recorded in the short marriage record might be from her first marriage rather than her maiden name. These cases are rare but if you are struggling to identify the bride, consider this possibility as well. Review the death records from a few years prior to the wedding—you may find the record of her first husband’s death.
